All my life (well, at least since I was about 8 years old) I have been fat and have lead a sedentary lifestyle. I was raised on fast food and junk food. I didn't even know how to eat healthy, so I have had to learn. It runs in my family to be overweight and have heart problems and diabetes, so I know I have to work extra hard to keep my weight at a healthy level.
My breaking point was in the Spring of 2009 when I tipped the scale at 240 lbs and started having to shop for my clothes in the plus size section. I also had high cholesterol and my glucose levels were in the pre-diabetes range.
I was disgusted with myself, so I finally took the advice of my gyno and started the South Beach Diet on August 9th, 2009 and after the first two weeks, I lost 11 lbs. I lost 29 more pounds, very slowly, over the course of the next few months. Since March 2010, my weight was holding steady at 200 lbs...that is, until Thanksgiving of 2010.
Once I put that first bite of "bad" food in my mouth, it was all over with. I fell off the wagon. Then, a cold spell hit and there went the end of excising. I was now at 212 lbs. and not getting any smaller.
So, on Monday, February 21st, 2011, I started over AGAIN. I have trying to eat healthier foods and smaller portions.
That still wasn't working, because my body had gotten back to the point where I was craving sugar all the time, so I started over on Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet on April 4th, 2011. So far, I have lost 2 lbs. But, despite putting a few lbs back on, my blood chemistry is still much healthier than when I was a size 20 back in 2009. In fact, my most recent a1c test results show that my levels are below the pre-diabetes range now!
It's slow going, but since this is going to be a lifelong process and not just a quick fix, I have to remember to take it one day at a time. This blog is the journal of the rest of my journey...I'm not saying you'll learn anything, but it is what it is.
